Surtain has all the measurables, traits, and skills it takes to succeed as an NFL corner. His athleticism, instincts, technique, and aggression make him one of the most well-rounded defensive backs to come out in quite some time. He's a true lock down corner who's very sticky in man coverage and can play on an island. Reads quarterback’s eyes very well, reacts quickly, and jumps route when sitting in zone. Can travel with #1 WR's if asked to and is considered none scheme specific. The CB's versatility and IQ are two of his strongest traits and often go unmentioned.

Weaknessess

Hard to find many weaknesses in Patrick's game but he did show signs of being overly physical with wideouts, drawing a lot of flags early on as a starter at Bama. Although rare, Surtain did prove to be vulnerable against double moves over the top and quick slants while playing off coverage.

Big Picture

Patrick Surtain Jr. is a can't miss DB prospects who's guaranteed to hear his name called before the 15th overall pick. All 32 teams could utilize his skillset and coverage abilities but would thrive in a cover 3 man heavy scheme. Whichever team pulls the trigger will be getting a future team captain, as well as tone setter and difference maker in their secondary. A likely future Pro Bowler with All-Pro potential. He's a second generation NFL cornerback, a first round talent, and 1a or 1b best defensive back in the draft.

One of the most well balanced defensive backs to come out of the draft in quite some time. Surtain resembles a lab-created cornerback prototype, featuring every physical attribute you'd want a corner to have. He's fast enough to be put on an island against CFB's best, quick enough to play in the slot, and strong enough to cover today's TE's of the NFL if and when needed. His ability to cleanly transition in and out of cuts laterally is already amongst the best.

At his best when playing cover 3 man but there's nothing Surtain can't do. He's very physical in press, mirrors opponents step for step in off man, and processes routes well when in zone. For his size. the Alabama CB features tremendous burst in and out of his breaks with little to no wasted motion or false steps. He can seamlessly flip his hips without losing any speed and was hardly ever beaten over the top. Patrick utilizes his hands, long arms, and upper body strength very well at the line of scrimmage. He does a great job of jamming his opponents, forcing them off their route, and often eliminating WR's from the play before they can even get going.

Has some serious ""Prime Time"" like abilities as a playmaker. He's a true ball hawk when roaming in zone coverage and does a great job of getting his head around to locate the ball in man. Surtain's length, massive vertical, and aggression when the ball is in the air, give him the advantage in any jump ball situation.

For a corner, he's as fearless as he is physical. Featuring a rare willingness to come down and make tackles near the LOS and aims to punish ball carriers any chance he gets. Will enter the NFL as a top 10 tackler at his position from both a technique and effort standpoint. Shows an ability to take on, disengage, and dodge oncoming blockers in order to make a play. Takes smart angles and maintains outside run support very well to force runners back inside.

Ultra aggressive corner who plays with Pro Bowl level confidence. Surtain has faced several 1st round wideouts over the last three years at Alabama and proved to be a worthy competitor. The CB can at times be too physical and handsy in coverage but shown tremendous improvement from his sophomore to junior year to not get called for PI or holding.
