Team Fit

SF

LAR

CHI

Best suited for a zone scheme that can take advantage of his agility and movement in space. He uses his length well and dictates the distance with ease. Alex rarely allows rushers to get inside his reach and is always first to engage. The Alabama left tackle has all the physical traits needed to translate to the NFL's jump in competition. Absorbs momentum well and is rarely seen being overpowered.

Weaknessess

Leatherwood's technique is rough. From his footwork to his hands, in both run and pass blocking, Alex needs a ton of refinement. The left tackle features a wide base, he sits high in his pass set and struggles to recover because of it. He's vulnerable to the inside move and was often caught jumping the corner, opening his hips too early, and giving the inside lane to the QB.

Big Picture

His length and athleticism translate perfectly to playing the position but he's still a very raw prospect who needs to continue to develop his skill set and grow his limited arsenal of blocking techniques. Teams will value his natural abilities and believe they can mold the athlete into a starting tackle at the next level. Rightfully so, but there's currently a litany of flaws that will be exposed if he's drafted as a day one starter. Alex Leatherwood should be considered a day two guy with eventual starter level potential.

Athleticism:

7.63

7.25

Leatherwood possesses above average athleticism for his size. His game features smooth fluid movement, active feet, and enough play strength to stalemate his opponents regularly. His film showcased a quick 1st step and the ability to block out in space but his impatience leads to overrunning his blocks. The tackle's athleticism is his biggest attribute and tool but is also heavily relied upon to mask and compensate for his technical inconsistencies.

Big Play Ability

Stout down blocker who tends to get caught lunging with his head down. It's hard to find much evidence of Leatherwood creating movement off the line of scrimmage. He's strong enough to stalemate his opponents, quick enough off the snap to win with body positioning and leverage but lacks the leg drive to impose his will. Alex is overly aggressive when targeting LB's in the second level, he’s impatient, and needs to take better pursuit angles.

Pass Blocking:

6.38

Features decent anchor ability and absorbs the bullrush well. His reach gives him a huge advantage at the point of attack and defenders struggle to disengage once he's gotten inside leverage. Meat hooks for hands but has little to no punch to his game. His footwork is uncontrolled, inconsistent, and he often crosses up his feet when kick sliding. Leatherwood's pass set and technique are currently below average but he wins ugly.

He’s not known as a mauler and doesn't play to punish his opponents. Alex heavily relies on his natural abilities to get the job done. His effort and energy tend to disappear a few plays a game but Alex has a willingness to get down field and attempt to block in space.

Struggles to process stunts, redirects, and blitzes. Still learning the position and has quite a bit of refinement needed before being considered a finished product. The LT's physical abilities will allow him to play both left and right tackle and possibly inside if needed.
