Strengths

The ability to be a versatile weapon out of the TE position is a huge strength for him to have. The ability to run majority of the route tree and even lined up at the WR position is a very positive trait to possess. Good speed, agility, and acceleration after the catch allows him to gain a lot of YAC. Has a high running motor an has a good football IQ to work the middle of the field to help out his QB.

Weaknessess

Blocking is a huge weakness in his game. Driving defenders backwards did not happen often and Dykes had to rely on a lot of technique when blocking. Adding more weight at the NFL level will be critical for him when taking on DEs and OLBs. Not a huge catching radius does hold him back from high pointing the ball over DBs in pass coverage.

Big Picture

Sean Dykes is a 6’2” TE coming out of Memphis that has athletic traits that allowed him to excel on the football field. Dykes is a TE that has WR type of speed and acceleration to make play

Athleticism:

7.25

Good explosiveness out of the TE position. This is a TE that does have WR type speed, acceleration, and agility. Dykes leans on his speed and size after the catch to fight for extra yards. His lateral agility is surprising coming out of a two-point or three-point stance when running his routes. Can be flexible and make low catches because of good bend in his knees.

There is a good amount of quickness within the release of his routes and his great timing really helps out in the receiving aspect of his game. Dykes runs his routes very clean and with a decent amount of foot speed. He does have the ability to make quick sharp cuts. However, more amounts of separation between him and the defender would help greatly. Dykes works the middle of the field well and was able to run good curl, drag, in, and post routes. This is a TE that is able to make contested catches with defenders draped all over him in pass coverage. Does not possess a huge catching radius but has a decent one to make outstretch catches in traffic. Was very effective in goal to go situations.

Blocking:

6.55

Not the ideal blocking TE in the run game but does have good leg drive and technique to not be a total liability. Dykes was able to make good quick blocks on defenders during WR and RB screens. When in-line blocking against bigger defenders that can block shed quickly, he has a hard time driving them backwards. His hands will fire up fast and land in the correct position to allow himself to drive the opponent in the opposite direction of the ball carrier.

Field Vision

This is a very competitive football player that took some big shots and would still be in the very next play. You can tell Dykes wants to play the game of football and will have his motor running high on every play. His catch point mentality is to make an complete effort on the ball on every pass thrown his way.

A very versatile TE that will be used very effectively at the NFL level. Dykes can line up out wide, in the slot, or even right on the line and is still able to run effective routes. Instincts around the goal line allowed him to get open and score on mismatches. He knows how to work back to the QB if he sees him getting pressured heavily.
