Injury History: Surgery To Ankle (2019), Surgery To Repair Torn Labrum (After 2019 Season)
Games Evaluated: 2019 Vs: LSU, Oklahoma State
Report By: Roy Countryman
Jones was a stalwart in the Texas secondary over the last few seasons. He was used in a variety of roles such as slot CB, outside CB, deep third S, and pseudo-LB/S in subpackages. He has terrific play recognition and instincts that allow him to use his closing quickness to bring down ball carriers with ease. Willing to fight through blocks and can shed WRs trying to block him who cannot match his tenacity. He is a sound pass defender who has a smooth backpedal and clean transitional skills. In zone who can sit back and read routes and then flash down to disrupt the catch point. When he was asked to blitz he utilizes terrific timing and functional strength to get past RBs trying to block him.
At times he will look to make a big hit rather than break down and secure tackle. He can be baited by QBs into jumping short and intermediate routes due to his aggressive playing style and that resulted in a number of big throws over his head. Was able to attack blockers and shed them at the college level, but not so sure he can do that against NFL caliber WRs and TEs. Was used in man coverage against slot WRs in college, but I am not so sure he can keep as close of coverage at the next level. Also has some injury questions that teams will have to vet and be comfortable with.
Brandon Jones was a vital member of the Texas secondary who made an impact as a combination safety and subpackage chess piece. He has 44 games of experience coming into the NFL and should find himself squarely in the conversation at a healthy number of snaps early and at worst he should be a key member of a special teams unit. Teams such as the Patriots, Eagles, Steelers, Chiefs, Dolphins, and Bears. Expect him to come off the board early on day three of the draft in the round 4 to round 5 range due to his injury questions. His playing style reminds me of Xavier Woods who was drafted by the Cowboys but has been a key cog to their success in the last few seasons due to his versatility.
