Scouting Report

ATHLETICISM: 7.26

Q.A.B.: 7.40
Flexibility: 7.20
C.O.D.: 7.00
Explosion: 6.70
Versatility: 8.00

Possesses an adequate height/weight/length profile for the position, and carries his weight in a balanced fashion throughout. Great balance to recover from initial moves from defenders. Has good foot quickness and agility, which is evidenced in his ability to mirror pass rushers as well as his usage on pulls. Very good flexibility in the hips with his ability to square up with linebackers at the second level or in quick pass sets. Not the strongest player or a consistent people mover, definitely the worst facet of his athleticism.

RUN BLOCKING: 7.22

In-Line: 7.00
Movement off L.O.S.: 7.60
Reach Block: 7.20
Pull & Block Outside: 7.30
Adjust In Space: 6.60
Use of Hands: 7.60

In the running game, he flies off the line of scrimmage in order to get on his assignment. His aforementioned hips help him gain position on reach blocks to seal off an area for the ball carrier to run through. He is very effective in the pulling role, using his foot quickness and acceleration to get to his assignment. Very good, disciplined hand placement and drive help him move people off their spot while avoiding penalties. Small "block radius" as when he gets to the second level he seems like he doesn't know what to do unless he climbs to a defender immediately and won't process where to go next.

PASS BLOCKING: 7.57

Quick Set: 7.20
Protect Corner: 7.00
Footwork / Redirect & Slide: 7.60
Anchor / Reset Ability: 8.10
Handle Games/Stunts: 7.70
Hands / Punch: 7.80

In quick sets, he is quick to square up with an attacker and utilizes a hop technique to make up for less raw strength in his anchor. Rarely gets his hands knocked away from him, and is great at mirroring and re-engaging in a block when it does happen. Got better at processing games and passing/catching players when needed as the season progressed. Was used as a puller to block an edge player in bootleg situations at times and his ability to mirror helped him succeed in that role. Also started helping his other lineman more as the season went on by hitting engaged rushers off balance.

COMPETITIVENESS: 7.63

Toughness: 7.70
Consistency / Motor: 7.20
Production: 8.00

Started all games in his last season at Rutgers and transferred to OSU and earned their LG spot and started all 14 of their games. Plays with a bit of a mean streak and has no problem putting you on the turf.

INTELLIGENCE: 7.43

Instincts: 7.00
Learn/Retain: 7.70
Teamwork: 7.60

He got better in progression and of course going from Rutgers to Ohio State will do that for a player, but it doesn't mean we need to take it for granted. Very good teammate as he was voted a team captain at Rutgers and his versatility having played at C and both OG spots over his college career should help him understand the nuances of each position and its responsibilities.

STRENGTHS

Jackson's three best traits are versatility, QAB, and pass protection. His movement skills help him in both phases of the game but in specific his ability to protect the QB, which is objective number 1.

WEAKNESSES

Functional strength is in the bottom half of the bell curve for his position. Needs to get better at processing in the run game, at the second level in specific. Plays with poor leverage making himself have to work harder than he should but he makes up for that with sound technique. If NFL coaches can get him to play at a lower pad level they can unlock a hell of a football player.

BIG PICTURE

Jackson should be a selection somewhere in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft and I would be shocked if he fell out of the first 3 interior linemen selected. He can play anywhere on the interior for any scheme though he projects best to a zone-blocking scheme that takes advantage of his movement skills.
