Strengths

I find picks 7 through 10 to be the most difficult this year since there are a bunch of running backs and wide receivers that have roughly the same value. I went with Conner and Thomas with my first two picks to make sure I started out with a balanced roster. They will both be rock solid players that will ensure a high scoring floor week to week. Roster balance is something that I strive towards each year, and I think I did a decent job of that in this draft. Watkins and Pettis are both more upside picks, but Thomas’ consistency will help balance that out. Watkins commanded 21% of targets when he was healthy last year and might be in line for more if Tyreek Hill is in fact suspended.

I think my running back depth is my biggest strength. Devonta Freeman and Aaron Jones are two of the best values in the draft and I’m ecstatic that I got both of them. Freeman is, of course, coming off of injury, but he only missed 3 games in 4 seasons before 2018. He had top 15 finishes in 3 straight years as well, including a #1 and #6 finish. With a super explosive Falcons offense, I expect Freeman to get back to his old self right away. Jones has missed 4 games two years in a row but has averaged 5.5 ypc in each of those seasons, and overall has put up really strong numbers when he plays. I’m expecting him to miss a few games, but he will be a very productive RB2/Flex. The rookie duo of David Montgomery and Miles Sanders should see a solid amount of playing time. Montgomery will likely slide right into the Jordan Howard role, which was 250 carries in 2018, good for 6th in the league. Sanders has more competition in the Eagles backfield, but he’s extremely talented and could steal a big role for himself.

Finally, I like that I have Kyler Murray stashed on my bench. His ceiling for fantasy is enormous given his rushing ability. Think about it- Lamar Jackson posted 15+ fantasy points every week since getting the starting job in Week 11, and Kyler is quicker, has a better arm, a better supporting cast, and a more creative offensive coordinator. If he breaks out Matt Ryan could become a trade piece going forward.

Weaknesses

I have a few issues with this draft, mainly that there is a decent amount of injury risk on my roster. Jones and Watkins could be highly impacted by injuries. Freeman could still have lingering issues that affect his productivity. James Conner may not be able to handle being such a workhorse, and David Montgomery’s back to back years of 250+ carries in college might take a toll. Odds are these injuries won’t occur for every player on my roster, but the worst case scenario is quite bad.

I also think my wide receiving corps is too reliant on upside. While I do like the balance that Michael Thomas could bring, it’s very possible that all of the receivers after him fall flat. Watkins has the injury concern as mentioned above. Pettis is in a crowded wide receiving room in San Francisco. I’m expecting James Washington to take the Juju Smith-Schuster role, but there will be a lot of guys pushing for it including Donte Moncrief, Diontae Johnson, Ryan Switzer, and Eli Rogers. Robert Foster and Quincy Enunwa will both be playing with young QBs who had accuracy issues last season. Again, taking high upside fliers in the later rounds is the way to go, but if they all fall short I will be scrambling to find wide receiving depth.

Finally, this isn’t a big concern, but I’m banking on Chris Herndon to be a surprise in 2019. He was fantasy’s #9 wide receiver from week 6 on and played on 50% of New York’s pass plays. Sam Darnold will also likely be relying on Herndon as a safety blanket in the middle of the field. If Herndon doesn’t pan out, I won’t have many tight end options on the waiver wire.

Defense and Kicker

As most of us at Blitz write in our fantasy articles, there is no reason to take a kicker and defense before the last two rounds. I took Greg Zurlein with my second to last pick, since he was 2017’s #1 kicker and averaged the most fantasy ppg (11.6) last season before going down with injury. I usually take my kicker before the defense, since I stream defenses by matchup each week. There were a few available defenses that had good week 1 matchups, but I chose the Eagles because they will be facing a depleted Redskins offense that will likely be starting a rookie QB in Dwayne Haskins. They’ll give Haskins a rough welcome to the NFL.
