We are inching ever closer to the start of the fantasy football season! Blitzalytics is here to give our insight on how you can strategize for your fantasy football drafts later this summer. This week I’m drafting from pick #9 in our 0.5 PPR format. In addition to 0.5 PPR, Blitz will be releasing mocks from all sorts of league types, including 2QB, Standard, Dynasty, and Auction. These mocks are done using Fantasy Pros’ Mock Draft Wizard, and the roster settings for today’s mock are as follows: 1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1TE, 1Flex (RB/WR/TE), D/ST (team defense), and K, with 0.5 PPR. Make sure to be on the lookout for more mocks in the lead up to the start of the fantasy football season!

Final Roster:

QB: Russell Wilson (SEA)

RB: Le’Veon Bell (NYJ)

RB: Joe Mixon (CIN)

WR: Amari Cooper (DAL)

WR: Brandin Cooks (LAR)

WR: Alshon Jeffrey (PHI)

TE: David Njoku (CLE)

FLX: Mark Ingram (BAL)

DST: New Orleans Saints

K: Stephen Gostkowski (NE)

Bench:

WR: Dede Westbrook (JAC)

RB: Latavius Murray (NO)

WR: Desean Jackson (PHI)

QB: Jared Goff (LAR)

WR: Mohammed Sanu (ATL)

TE: Jordan Reed (WAS)

Overview: I have a very solid and reliable strategy with regards to 0.5 PPR Mock Drafts. Based on the somewhat added weight afforded to receptions in 0.5 PPR mocks versus standard drafts, it is essential to have excellent production from receivers and great depth at the position. While it is justifiable to draft the top 3-4 producing in the NFL with your first few picks, I instead opted to focus my receiving core on available wide receivers. Despite this, running back was the position on which I placed the greatest importance.

Since starting-caliber running backs are few and far between (and since this is a 0.5 PPR and not a pure PPR one), it was important to strike a balance between high-producing receivers and running backs when choosing my early picks. This is why I devoted my first two picks to running backs. Le’Veon Bell is poised to have a comeback season after missing all of 2018. With the still developing second-year quarterback Sam Darnold at the helm of the Jets offense, Le’veon Bell has the ability to return to his past success and be an integral of both the Jets passing and rushing attack. Joe Mixon is another great starting running back. He has the potential to build on his breakout sophomore season in which he rushed for nearly 1,200 yards and 8 touchdowns. Both of these players fit the role of a starting running back on your fantasy football team.

As the depth of wide receivers is greater than that of running backs, I was able to devote my next few picks to WRs. I am very pleased with the starting wide receivers that I was able to pick up. Amari Cooper, Brandin Cooks, and Alshon Jeffrey are all either the first or the second option on their respective teams, and will continue to produce starting-caliber results for your fantasy team. Cooper will look to build on his success after his trade to the Cowboys in which he caught 53 passes for 725 yards and 6 touchdowns in his first nine games with his new team. Cooks is set to have his fifth consecutive 1000+ yard season with the Rams. Jeffrey will continue to be a solid receiving option in the potent Eagles offense led by Carson Wentz. Despite my selection of tight ends later in the draft, I was still able to get a starting-caliber tight end in David Njoku.

The emphasis on attaining running backs and wide receivers with my first six packs reduced my focus on initially drafting a quarterback. Despite this, I was able to attain two starting-caliber quarterbacks, picking up Russell Wilson in the 7th round and Jared Goff in the 11th round. Both are MVP candidates, and are poised to build upon their great success over the past few seasons. Wilson and Goff both passed for 30+ touchdowns last season, and will be great choices as a starting quarterback on your fantasy team. Fortunately, because of the great depth at quarterback, you can grab a top quarterback in later rounds of the draft.

Very briefly, for defense and kicker strategy, wait until the last two rounds. The value simply isn’t there to get them any earlier, and to take them earlier would take away from the opportunity to draft at positions of much greater need.

Overall, I am pleased with how my draft turned out. I have great starting wide receivers, two excellent starting running backs, a solid TE, options at starting quarterback, a dependable defense, and depth at both the wide receiver and running back positions. Look out for Blitzalytics’ upcoming drafts in standard and PPR formats, as the strategies for these leagues differ from 0.5 PPR.
