In the wake of an incredible comeback victory over the hated division rival Houston Texans, the Titans star left tackle likely has suffered a torn ACL and will have an MRI to confirm. Jay Glazer of Fox Sports was first to report the sad news.
The injury was not without an unfortunate foreshadowing as Lewan has frequently been knocked out of a few series with injuries this season. He was also knocked out in today’s action for a brief period but returned. Veteran backup swing lineman Ty Sambrailo took the field in his stead and promptly gave up a strip-sack to J.J. Watt as seen below
What does this mean going forward?
The Titans lose their best offensive lineman and the Steelers’ prodigiously talented defense will be salivating at the prospect next Sunday.
Fortunately, the Titans do have some internal options such as starting Dennis Kelly at left tackle, placing Sambrailo and an immature rookie first-round selection Isaiah Wilson at right. They also have veteran career swing backup David Quessenberry on the practice squad. Another possible combination is what we saw today with Sambrailo at left and Kelly at right.
Externally, free-agent options such as Cordy Glenn, Jared Veldheer, and Rick Leonard are on the market. The team could also raid another team’s practice squad list for such luminaries as Dallas Cowboys’ Jordan Mills, Saints’ Calvin Throckmorton, Eagles’ Prince Tega-Wanagho, or the Giants’ Kyle Murphy.
They could also make a minor trade with a team not in contention such as Washington for Cornelius Lucas, Panthers’ Greg Little, Vikings’ Oli Udoh.
Expect the team to exhaust all internal options before going into the murky waters of the free agency and trade markets.
Get well soon, Taylor!
