The San Francisco 49ers started the 2019 season off by handing out large money contracts to a couple of new faces in the locker room, Dee Ford and Kwon Alexander. Ford was acquired in a trade with Kansas City for a second-round pick in 2020. They immediately signed him to a 5yr/$85 million deal. Kwon Alexander was signed to a 4yr/$54 Million deal at the start of free agency. The addition of Alexander solidifies the LB position, at least enough to feel comfortable grabbing one after the first round. But Ford’s presence won’t change the draft plans for the Niners — if Bosa is there, they will take him. Bosa, Buckner, and Ford would vault the 49ers into the nightmares of all quarterbacks who face them.

On the other side of the ball, the offense didn’t change too much. The most important thing for San Fran on this side of the ball is health. QB Jimmy Garoppolo and RB Jerick Mckinnon are ahead of schedule and should both be ready to go for the start of the new season. They also signed RB Tevin Coleman and WR Jordan Matthews to 1 year, low-cost deals. Coleman joins a crowded backfield but should demand a fair share of touches week to week, and Matthews joins an unproven but promising wide receiving corps that lacks a tall red zone target. He could end up having a similar turnaround to what Marquise Goodwin had under Kyle Shanahan last season. Overall, the 49ers don’t have any glaring needs, they just need playmakers to complement the solid core they already have built. The 49ers have 6 draft picks this year, and I expect them to go the best player available with all six picks.
