Right, when I finished writing the Kenny Young Trade Grade article I had a notification from my phone notifying me about any transactions that occur as the Trade Deadline is getting closer and closer. When I looked at my phone I saw that once again Joe Flacco is a New York Jet. We will get into the analysis of both sides of the Flacco trade but it continues to show that anything can happen in the NFL. As the trade deadline is coming closer and closer teams are looking to make moves to improve their team and their salary cap. This is an example of that as a result of the Joe Flacco trade.

Philadelphia Eagles trade QB Joe Flacco to the New York Jets for a conditional 2022 6th round pick

Let's talk about who Joe Flacco is quickly. Joe Flacco is most notable for his tenure with the Baltimore Ravens where he led the team to a Superbowl 47 victory against the San Francisco 49ers where he was the Super Bowl MVP. He would eventually be placed by Lamar Jackson who the Ravens selected 32nd Overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. Flacco Would later be traded to the Broncos where he was terrible and got released at the end of the season. He would sign a one-year deal with the Jets during the 2020 season and heavily regressed. Flacco would land with the Philadelphia Eagles and is now back playing with the Jets as a result of this trade.

Philadelphia Eagles Side

Congratulations Eagles. You got rid of a player past their prime and was probably never going to be used unless both Gardner Minshew and Jalen Hurts suffered a severe injury. The Eagles during Free Agency signed Flacco to a one-year contract worth 3.5 million dollars to be the backup. Then they got an offer they could not refuse when acquiring Gardner Minshew from the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 6th round draft pick. Minshew is younger, cheaper, and a lot better than what Joe Flacco is today. They got an extra draft pick for a guy who won't be a part of the Eagles for the long term during their rebuild. Great Work by Howie Roseman making this trade.

New York Jets Side

Now before I talk about it, yes the Jets need a Quarterback now that Zach Wilson will be out 2-4 weeks due to a PCL Injury (It absolutely should be 4 weeks that Wilson will be out). They needed a confident backup quarterback and who did the Jets decide to add to their roster, Joe Flacco. Yes, the Jets decided to trade for Joe Flacco while Zach Wilson is recovering from his injury. I was very annoyed hearing about this deal when it was announced. Here is where I am annoyed with this deal. Having a veteran backup should have already been set up in situations like this. They had Mike White who never played a regular-season drive until the matchup in New England and had a James Morgan who was terrible and is a complete bust that Joe Douglas wasted a 4th round pick on. Morgan also got cut during Final cut day this season. The Jets should have already had a veteran QB at this time and yet the Jets decided not to get one which still makes no sense to this day. Speaking of which, don't the New York Jets already have a veteran Quarterback on this team with Josh Johnson on the practice squad. Why don't we just call him up to the active roster and have him as the starter? Was this move really necessary to make? Especially due to how bad Flacco was with the New York Jets last season. Granted it was Adam Gase as the head coach but he has a part of the blame as well. This is not the Baltimore Ravens version of Joe Flacco here as he has suffered massive levels of regression. To make it worse, The season is all but over for the Jets and to sacrifice draft capital for a guy that will not be a part of the rebuilding process in a year is just a mistake. This pick is also a conditional pick and if Flacco plays more then they will sacrifice a 5th round draft choice instead of a 6th round choice in the 2022 NFL Draft. That pick transfers if Flacco plays in 50% of 4 games in the 2021 NFL Season.

Grades for the Joe Flacco Trade

Philadelphia Eagles: A+

New York Jets: D

No question who won this trade here as it is an easy win for the Philadelphia Eagles. They were not going to utilize Flacco at all as Gardner Minshew was younger and a better option as their backup option. For the Jets, this move should have never happened to begin with and now they are trading for a guy who could have been re-signed during Free Agency and won't be a part of the Jets roster during their rebuild. It's not a HACKENBURG Grade as the Jets needed a backup but this is absolutely a terrible move made by Joe Douglas and the Jets.
