There are many trades that are done in the NFL. Some trades involve giving up a lot of assets, where in other trades there are barely any assets given. Sometimes trades are made due to salary reasons. A phrase often described as a salary dump. This what this deal feels like as it involves the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Texans where it involves OG Shaq Mason. The details of this trade is down below.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Acquire: 2023 6th Round Pick (179th Overall)
Houston Texans Acquire: OG Shaq Mason and 2023 7th Round Pick (230th Overall)
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Side
The Buccaneers are doing the right thing by blowing it all up this offseason. They pretty much have too now that Tom Brady is retired and how bad they performed this season. The only reason why they even made the playoffs was due to how terrible the NFC South was this season. It was also clear Mason was a one year rental and for a pick upgrade it further proved how much of a salary dump this trade was.
While the Buccaneers saved cap space, let's be real Mason was their best offensive lineman last season, so they are downgrading at an important position and could have gotten more value for Mason.
Houston Texans Side
I may not be a big fan of what the Texans have done the past few years (Getting better now that Jack Easterby is finally gone), but I really like this move. I always say that it never hurts to build the offensive line and they already have great tackles in Laremy Tunsil and Tytus Howard. When looking at the Texans interior o-line was terrible last season. Kenyon Green, who they spent a first round pick on, did not have a good rookie season at all. So when they draft their quarterback of the future, the Texans have to ensure he has protection and acquired Shaq Mason. Plus the Texans may really have something in RB Dameon Pierce who played well and having a great guard would open holes for him to run through. It impresses me with how Shaq Mason played as,...
For how he played, the Texans did not give up much for him as they only downgraded a late round pick which is a benefit. The Texans are in a rebuild too and could afford to take his contract. Not bad Houston, please don’t botch drafting your new franchise quarterback.
Grades for Shaq Mason Trade Tampa Bay Buccaneers: C
Houston Texans: B+
Definitely got to give the Higher grade to the Houston Texans. They improved the offensive line a lot and gave more protection to the future franchise QB or Davis Mills. The Buccaneers are blowing it up and are currently in cap hell. Just moving Mason is a benefit, but their offensive line got more horrendous. Overall great move by Houston Texans GM Nick Caserio and Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Jason Licht. Hopefully this trade works out for both teams and Shaq Mason himself.
