Like I said in my trade grade for CJ Henderson anything can happen in the NFL if it is on the field with an upset or off the field with a transaction made by the team. No joke Right When I was writing about Buyers, Sellers, and Avoiders for the Trade Deadline, and was talking about the Eagles. The news comes out that the Philadelphia Eagles have traded Zach Ertz. It's not a complete surprise that Ertz was traded but I was more surprised by the timing. Now that the trade is official it is now time to look at the trade. So, In this article, I will analyze the trade with both parties involved and give my grade of the trade for both the Eagles and the Arizona Cardinals.

Philadelphia Eagles have Traded TE Zach Ertz to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for CB Tay Gowen and a 2022 5th round pick

Now before we get into the trade I want to say that I doubt that Ertz plays for the Arizona Cardinals this week as he just recently played Thursday Night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is going to need a few weeks to learn the playbook.

Philadelphia Eagles Side

This trade should absolutely not be a surprise to any Eagles fan. There were rumblings ever since the Eagles drafted Dallas Goedert that the Eagles could trade Zach Ertz in the future. The writing was on the wall for Zach Ertz as the rumors continued to grow more and more until today when it was made official. This trade had to be done for the Eagles. Zach Ertz was no longer the long-term option for this team and I expect Dallas Goedert to be extended and have a larger role for this offense.

So in this trade, they acquired CB Tay Gowen and a 2022 5th round pick. Many wondered who the heck Tay Gowen was. Tay Gowen is a cornerback that was taken during the 2021 NFL Draft and was selected by the Arizona Cardinals 223rd overall in the 6th round. Gowen has not played a lot for Arizona but what is interesting to note is that the Eagles were extremely interested in drafting during the 2021 NFL Draft and almost traded up for him. Until Arizona decided to select him before they could make the trade. So the interest was there for Philadelphia and the Eagles got a late-round draft pick to help rebuild the team. With trading Zach Ertz the Eagles clear 5 million dollars that is now added to their salary cap. This gives them more economic value to sign players in the offseason or re-sign players to their team.

Honestly, I like the compensation that the Eagles got. They got more depth at secondary and got a player they wanted to draft during the 2021 NFL Draft, they get salary relief, and extra draft capital to utilize. But it stinks that the Eagles would have to trade one of the main contributors for the Eagles Superbowl 52 run and victory. At least they got something for a guy they were not going to utilize for the future.

Arizona Cardinals Side

Arizona Absolutely needed to find a tight end. Especially as Maxx Williams was carted off and suffered a season-ending injury which absolutely sucks as he was starting to show flashes. Arizona is in win-now mode plus Kliff Kingsbury and Steve Keim needs to get this team to the playoffs to secure his job so why not complement Kyler Murray by giving him another target to throw the ball to.

Arizona did not give too much in exchange for Ertz. They traded a late-round pick and a player that the Cardinals were not using at all. But there are a ton of risks with Ertz especially with the 5 million dollars cap hit that will be added to their salary cap, Ertz has durability concerns, and has a habit of dropping balls.

While there are risks there are benefits with Ertz as they get a veteran player in the locker room, another target for Kyler Murray to throw too, and they fill a much-needed hole on this offense that the Cardinals organization needed to fill on offense.

Fun fact I did a little research and Julie Ertz (Zach’s wife) actually grew up in the state of Arizona. That definitely contributed to Ertz wanting to go to Arizona and play for the Cardinals this season.

Grades for the Zach Ertz Trade

Philadelphia Eagles: A

Arizona Cardinals: B+

I think this is absolutely a win-win trade but I will give the Higher grade to the Philadelphia Eagles mainly due to salary relief that they get from trading Zach Ertz away. But overall this doesn't hurt Arizona as their offense has a ton of talent for a deep playoff push in an extremely tough division.
