Rangy speed and acceleration to come up to make plays in open space on ball carriers is present. He has fluid hips and the flexibility to COD quickly. He tackles well in space and can deliver some big hits on smaller ball carriers. There are good coverage skills in both man and zone type looks. He has good closing quickness and can swat down balls that are in reach of the WRs hands. In M/M coverage he is able to stick with WRs throughout routes because of his play speed and COD ability. Newsome II is versatile CB that can defend in the slot or out on the outside boundary.

Weaknessess

Being discipline throughout routes is a concern. Gets very grapy on receivers when trying to make a play on the ball. In press situations, using his hands to jam the WR's at the LOS is not there enough. Turning his head to make a play on the ball is not as present as well. This is a big reason why he gets a decent amount of PI or holding calls deep down the field.

Big Picture

Greg Newsome II is an athletic CB out of Northwestern that has rangy speed, acceleration, and quickness that allows him to make plays all over the field. That speed comes in very well when he has to come up and make a tackle on the ball carrier in space. This is a CB that has good man and zone coverage skills. His best work is done in tight M/M coverage where he can rely on his fluid hips and speed to stick to WRs throughout their routes. Newsome II does get too grapy in coverage and does not always turn his head to track the ball which has led to many penalties deep down the field. He does make good breaks on balls to swat them down but needs to develop his hands more to produce more big time INTs for his team. In press coverage situations, Newsome II does not use his hands enough to jam WRs when releasing off the LOS. He will rely more on his quick acceleration and speed when the WRs come off the line in press coverage. This is a CB that could go in the first 3 rounds but needs some development in his game before taking over the #1 CB role for a team.

Natural hips that allow him to COD quickly and follow receivers throughout their routes. The foot speed and agility are at a good level for Newsome II. He can also travel laterally with decent agility and balance. Newsome II has good play speed and acceleration to travel deep down the field in coverage. His speed lets him come up and make a plays on a ball carrier in space. He can make good, formed tackles on a WR’s. There is good length, size, and flexibility to him. These qualities let him stretch and defend balls.

Good M/M coverage ability in his game that lets him stick to receivers throughout routes in the middle or deep down the field. When he plays off in zone coverage, he has the speed to jump routes and come up to hit WRs underneath. Newsome II can recover well if beaten because of his natural speed and he has good fluid hips that allow him to change directions quickly to make plays on the balls. In press coverage, Newsome II tends to give the WRs a cushion off the LOS. There was not enough hand fighting at the LOS when the WR goes to release into his route. The action of turning his head needs to be more active in his game. Newsome II can get very grabby while defending a pass and drew many PI calls deep down the field.

The skills to defend the pass while the ball is in the air is present in his game. He can make plays mid jump, but his timing was off at times. Newsome II has good closing quickness to make a play on the ball or WR as well. More action of turning his head at the right time will lead to more success at the next level. In addition, he was able to bat down and break up passes in receivers’ grasps many times. He does however use his hands too much throughout routes and drew a decent amount of PI calls.

A cornerback that makes clean formed tackles in space. Newsome II is not afraid to get low and wrap up the ball carrier coming at him. He attacks ball carriers at good angles when he gets low. There is pop and energy behind his hits as well. He does have trouble block shedding, but he will not be a total liability against the run.

This is a fiery player that plays the game at a high intensity. Newsome II is an aggressive player, but he tends to get too aggressive on WRs throughout routes, which has translated to PI and holding calls thrown his way. He has a good motor, but he is not going to fly all over the field.

The instincts in his game to be around the ball carrier is there. This is a CB that will attack with aggression and will show good effort to make the play for his team. Being able to play smart and avoid penalties does need some more improvement. He does recognize route concepts at a good level and did not get beat much deep down the field. Newsome II has the ability to defend in the slot or out on the boundary.
