Team Fit
Webb already has a leg up on other defensive backs in this draft class because of his size. Webb is over two inches taller than the average DB in the NFL and that will be very attractive to NFL scouts. Webb’s size and speed make him an excellent high safety, in one and two high looks. Webb is excellent at breaking up passes over the top when the play is in front of him and breaks hard on the ball. Webb excels in man coverage situations on outside receivers and should have no problem, matching up with bigger possession receivers. Webb is appealing to NFL scouts because he can not only cover well, but also can fit well in the run game. Webb is hard hitting and aggressive in run fits and shoots gaps when he sees them. Webb’s biggest upside comes from his ability to play anywhere in the NFL secondary. He will be drafted by most teams as a safety, but Webb played cornerback at Georgia and can play either on the outside, or over the top in an NFL secondary.
Weaknessess
Webb’s biggest downside is his lack of familiarity at the defensive back position. Webb was a four star WR recruit and was signed as such when he went to Georgia. This is the reason for his lack of instincts and recognition skills while playing in the secondary. His ball skills are lacking for the same reason and he tends to lose sight of the ball when it goes over his head, leading to big plays. Webb doesn’t have the quickness to match up with slot receivers and needs to work on his catch man and press technique if he wants to play in the slot. As stated above, he hits gaps hard in the run game but needs to work on recognizing the run and shooting the right gaps if he wants to be an effective run fit safety at the next level.
Big Picture
Webb is going to be an interesting draft prospect because of his great combination of size and speed. He can be effective at any level of the secondary and should only get better over time as he gains familiarity at the safety/cornerback position. Webb will be most effective as a safety in a high looks and can play as the nickel when needed. He can fit in the run game and should be able to play as a three down guy if his defensive back skills improve at the next level. The worry about Webb is his lack of ball skills when the ball isn’t in front of him. He struggles to make plays on the ball when the receiver is level or past him and needs to work on getting in-phase on receivers over the top before attempting to make a play on the ball. Webb will drop in the draft significantly due to his lack of production at Georgie and lack of experience at the DB position but he should be given a chance by a team on day three of the draft. Expect to see Webb go in the later half of day three. I expect him to go in the 7th round. If a team values his size and athletic ability at the DB position, he could easily be reached on and go as early as round 5-6, but round 7 is a more conservative draft position.
