PIT

The athletic ability to get moving all around the field to make play is present. He has good speed when rushing the passer and the flexibility to dip around the bend at the POA. Possess a good rip move when he is rushing the passer and can finish to deliver a sack for his team. In space, he plays ball carriers well. Toney sets the edge at a good level when stretchers are running to his side to force the ball carrier to the inside.

Weaknessess

There are not a huge set of pass rush moves in his possession outside of his rip and speed moves. This is not a powerful DE that will throw OL to get by them. Toney is not going to shed blocks at a consistent rate in the run game. At times, he can get off balance which allows OTs to take advantage of him.

Big Picture

Shaka Toney out of Penn State is a speed rushing DE that has a good range of flexibility and lateral movement ability. He has good speed that allows him to have a wide range to chase down ball carriers all over the field. This is not a DE that is going to rush with a lot of power to run through offensive linemen. Toney does not possess a huge range of pass rushing moves as well but he does have a good rip move to fool OTs when he wants to rush to the inside shoulder of linemen. Toney can set the edge well to force backs to the inside, but he is not going to consistently block shed through to make an impact for the run defense. Toney is a DE that can drop into coverage if defensive coordinators want him too as well. This is a DE that has the athleticism to play in both 34 and 43 defensive schemes.

The lateral agility is at a good level for Toney. He has quickness to move around the defensive line laterally to make plays. Toney also has good flexibility to shoot low when rushing the passer. He does not have the best balance and at times got thrown around because of it. He has good explosiveness off the snap and when he is engaging contact at the POA. He has the speed to get around OT and attack ball carriers in the backfield. His play strength does not possess a whole lot of power and leans on more quickness.

Big Play Ability

There is a good first step off the LOS that allows him to gain an advantage on OTs. Toney’s hands are not super active and quick, but they are strong. There is not a huge set of moves in Toney’s arsenal, but he was able to use a successful rip move on OTs. He was able to win with leverage when rushing but at times was off balance. There is a good finish ability when Toney gains the edge on a OL at the POA and has the athleticism to chase down QBs that attempt to escape out of the pocket.

Against The Run:

6.95

Toney sets the edge at a good level and is able to chase down backs when stretches are running to his side. He is not going to blow through OL on a consistent basis. The speed that he possesses in his game allows him to have good range to chase down ball carriers. He can shoot into gaps if he fires with enough burst, but linemen can control him if they get a good grasp on him. Toney does wrap up ball carriers well in space and attacks with aggressiveness.
