Strengths

Big, strong, and long, this interior defensive lineman is a tank with length. Nearly impossible for college O-linemen to move him off the LOS, Mathis' utilizes every bit of his wide body and long frame to plug up running lanes and offer a physical presence from the 0-5 tech. Phidarian's explosive and relentless hand fighting allow him to seperate and disrupt the timing of blockers. Bends and uses leverage well for his size. Offers versatility to any defensive line no matter the scheme.

Weaknessess

Laterally challenged, heavy footed, and struggles to get down the line against plays on the perimiter. The occasional high and wide base can lose him the leverage battle. The Bama prospect has a limited pass rushing skillset and could be deemed a rotational run stuffer on 1st and 2nd downs. Tends to settle in and anchor when innicially blocked. The DT often found production while waiting for clean up work around the LOS. Lacks recovery and can't build or regain momentum once he's brought to a hault.

Big Picture

Phidarian Mathis is an intrigueing D-line prospect with both versatility and limitations. He was very productive as a rotational D-linemen, racking up 12 TFL's and 9 sacks in his final season at Alabama. The perminant team captain has been raved about for his leadership and ability to command a locker room. He's a tone setter who was consistently outworking his opponets with effort and raw power. Mathis is a difference maker in the interior and will instantly improve any teams chances of stopping the run. He's not scheme depended and his versatility brings depth across the D-line. If the Bama prospect can evolve as a pass blocker, he could certainly be considered best value at IDL in the draft, as he's not likely to go until the 3rd round.
