Strengths

Plays the game with a good amount of toughness and a high mauling ability. There is a good level of explosiveness and movement off the LOS to let him gain a small advantage on defenders at the POA. In the run game, he is able to overpower defenders straight on. He can make reach blocks and use his hands to control defender both. In pass protection, he has the ability to be an anchor at the POA and not let defenders’ power through him. His hands also allow him some success here in controlling rushers that are trying to get away or to the side.

Weaknessess

Fast and quick defenders have the ability to beat him easily in pass protection. When blitzes are running directly at Myers, he lacks the lateral movement to slide and pick a defender up. He does not have great flexibility in his knees and his footwork lacks speed. Having slower lateral movement also effects his ability to mirror defenders in space. Developing more overall balance is only going to help him become a better player at the next level.

Big Picture

Josh Myers is a mauling center out of Ohio State that was able to produce at a good level for the Buckeyes. This is a center that does not have quick feet but has the ability to take on defenders with good explosiveness off the LOS. In the run game, his best trait is taking on defenders straight on and powering through them with his brute strength. He is not going to be a center that can change directions quickly and pick up multiple blocks. In pass protection, his hands allow him to control defenders and keep them at bay. Quicker defenders that can run stunt and that are effective with their hands were able to gain some success off Myers. There tend to be confusion on Myer’s part when blitzes were running up the middle. The lateral movement ability to slide and pick up defenders is not at a consistent level. However, there is an ability to take on powerful bullrushes and not get pushed back into the QB. Overall, this is a quality center, but he needs to develop more quickness, speed, and balance to become valuable player at the next level. Myers is a day two prospect that could be off the board as early as the middle of the second round.

Player Comp

Athleticism:

6.88

There is not much quickness and flexibility in his game. More bend in his knees out of his stance will benefit him more at the next level. His lateral agility lacks in pass protection at times. The ability to slide quickly can be non-existent when rushers attack aggressively. Myers has the explosiveness off the snap and when engaging contact at the POA. Has some balance in the run game but can get off-balance when going against faster rushers in pass protection. This is a center that plays the game with strong strength and wants to win with straight power.

The ability to take a defender straight on in a down run block is at a good level. Myers does not have the quickest movement off the LOS but does bring explosiveness when engaging contact. He does not have the fastest overall movement, but it is effective enough to allow him to gain an advantage. Myers can get out on reach blocks but the ability to pull at a high rate is not present. He can make outside blocks if he gets there and wins with his straight power. There is not a huge COD ability to adjust to make a block on a defender. He does use his strong hands effectively when he gets a grip on a defender.

Pass Blocking:

When there was a quick set in pass pro, he is quick in reaching to the defender in front of him. This is a center with the ability to play with good leverage at the POA. However, he does not always have the best flexibility in his knees. To withstand fast pass rushers he needs quickness, which he lacks. He does not have quick feet to mirror defenders consistently. There is an anchor ability in Myer’s game, and he was able to control bullrushes. Quick inside moves can expose him to the inside but if Myers has a good grip on the defender, then he can control them out of the way. He is good with his hands and fires fast punches that are effective at keep defender at bay.

The communication with his guards could be better. When blitzes were thrown at Myers, defenders were able to expose him and his teammates. Stunts that are ran at him can also be ran effectively at a high rate. Myers does not have much versatility.
