Strengths
The power to dominate defenders into the turf is present. In the run game, he is a force that can power defenders into the 2nd level of the defense if he has excellent leverage at the POA. He sets good traps in the run game to give the ball carrier a lane to run through. Delivers powerful punches that keep defenders away in pass pro. He can handle power rushers that want to use bull rushes to collapse the pocket.
Weaknessess
This is not a guard that always maintains balance with a good overall blocking base at the POA. He does not always bend his knees and his footwork lacks. His foot speed lacks with agility and it shows when he has to make pull action blocks. He does not have the ability to consistently slide to help out his C & RT at a consistent rate because of the lack of foot agility. Speed rushers that can change directions quickly can beat him easily in space.
Big Picture
Wyatt Davis is a guard out of Ohio State that wants to win with straight power. The ability to get off the snap of the ball quickly is present in his game. However, he lacks quick footwork and the foot agility to move around the LOS to help his RT and C in pass pro. Davis does do a good job at looking for more rushers to block in pass pro by keeping his head on a swivel. This is a guard that is much better at handling power rushers than finesse rushers. There is not a lot of play speed in his game to get out into space on pull actions. This is a much better in-line run blocker that can drive defenders into the 2nd level of the defense. He can find defenders to block in the 2nd level of the defense. Davis also has quick hands that deliver powerful punches at the POA in pass pro. Overall, developing more speed and flexibility at the NFL level will be key for Davis’ development.
Player Comp
Athleticism:
7
Good quickness off the LOS when the ball is snapped. Does not have the best flexibility in his knees. Quick finesse type pass rushers gave him trouble at the POA because Davis does not have the most agile feet. Davis has sloppy footwork that needs some improvement. If he is not balanced, defenders can gain better leverage and a good push up the middle of the pocket. There is not a whole lot of lateral ability when he is sliding to help out the C and RT. He has a very powered based play strength and will explode into defenders with that power to make a block.

Has good movement off the LOS in the run game. When he is in-line/down blocking, he does a good job at driving his opponents backwards. Davis has a good ability to go from one block to the next with power. He can drive defenders into the second level of the defense if he gains enough leverage at the POA. He is able to gain majority of his leverage with good hand position on the defender when driving. Out in space, he can overpower defenders if he gets there but he tends to be late because he does not have the best athleticism. If the play speed was not there, he was not able to produce effective pull action blocks with force.
Pass Blocking:

On deep and short pass drops he can handle the bull rush at a good level. The quicker type of pass rushers gave him problems at the POA. There were a few stunts ran at Davis and he was only able to pick up some. On faster stunts, Davis did not have enough foot quickness and balance to shuffle with speed to pick up the defender. In quick sets, Davis can be effective because he gets off the snap of the ball at a good rate. He is an anchor against power rushers coming straight at him but the ability to combat those fast rushers that know how to use their hands effectively can cause him problems. He does land accurate and powerful punches at rushers with enough force to gain separation at the POA.

Davis is a guard with the competitiveness and toughness to take on big powerful defenders at the LOS. He does have a mauling ability to want to drive defenders into the turf. Does not have a huge motor and lacks consistent endurance on every down. I can tell that he has the awareness and smarts to keep looking for blocks at the LOS in pass protection. He plays through the whistle and has the intangibles to improve at the guard position.

The communication he makes between the C and RT does show at times, but it needs to be more consistent when picking up/recognizing stunts. Davis tends to lack the quickness to pick up stunts as well. This is a lineman that is going to stay at the interior of the offensive line throughout his career.
