Strengths

Cam has good athleticism for the LB spot with good range to make plays all over the field. He has some natural leverage being slightly shorter that he uses to his advantage to get under the pads and lineman and, typically, shed blocks when needed. He is extremely aggressive and not afraid to plug gaps. She shows good recognition of plays and knowing where the ball is going before pursuit. He takes good angles to the ball as well. He is a sure-handed tackler always wrapping the opponent. He is extremely tough in how he plays. Has the athletic ability to cover both TEs and also RBs. He follows the QBs eyes well in zone coverage drifting where needed

Weaknessess

He is a little undersized for the typical LB. His lack of length can also give him fits when he is locked in with longer offensive lineman. While he has good range, he does not have elite speed as well for the position. He played in a blitz heavy defense and while he is well versed in attacking the QB, he does not have a lot of pass rush moves handy and seems to primarily attack in a reactionary sense. He also does not have a ton of experience in coverage and especially man coverage. He will need some coaching to get up to speed but does show the abilities required to handle coverage both RBs and TEs effectively.

Big Picture

McGrone has all the physical and mental tools you want in a MIKE LB. Although a little undersized, he has good range and is fearless on the field. He played part of last season with a cast on his hand and he was still relentless. He has very limited amount of time as a true starter but has been playing since his freshman year. He played in a blitz heavy defense so he is well versed in taking on offesive lineman. He has natural leverage he tries using but doesn't have the strength to match up well. He does not have a wide array of pass rush moves. He will attack the first gap he sees but sometimes he attacks too quick not stopping the play. He processes quickly though and takes great angles to the ball carrier. He plays with high energy on all plays as well while being a great communicator. He will need more work on pass coverage, getting extremely few reps in man defense but seems to show he has the aptitude for in with the very limited sample size given. Is farther ahead in zone coverage development. Cam seems primed for a long career, but will need to work on pass rush skills or coverage skills to make himself an everydown player.

Athleticism:

7.9

7.25

Shows great overall athleticism for the position in how he plays. He didn't test during the pro day so can't stack his numbers against others. He moves very fluidly all over the field including able to turn his hips well and get upfield. He has good explosiveness but not enough to beat tackles consistently. He shows good speed and quickness, especially at the LOS. He shows good strength, but not enough to take on OL. He has great acceleration to close in a hurry on a ball carrier.

Has good first step quickness to get into holes. Has natural leverage being shorter than most lineman, but doesn't have the strength to take them on. He also lacks any real rush moves, relies basically on open space he can bounce around to or have a free alley to the QB. He does show decent timing but often worked on stunts or a delay before rushing. While adequate, this is a weak spot for him. Needs to learn to make plays himself instead of scheme made plays.

Coverage:

7.25

He has the athleticism to move well in space at the second level. He does not have a lot of coverage experience so is very raw. Has shown improvment in route recognition, especially plays in the flat. Needs to work on awareness when working to his zone not to get hit by another receiver. Gets laser focused on QB and can lose receivers in area. Has ahtleticism to cover RBs and TEs man to man, just needs to work on technique and recognizing routes.

Against The Run:

Has natural leverage he uses to his ability. Does good job keeping slight distance when attacking the line to bounce around lineman in directino of ball carrier. Struggles greatly in lineman latches on. Relies primarily and reading and plugging holes, but can react too quick leaving cutback lane open. Has good range to get all over the field and takes good angles to the ball. Very solid wrap up tackler, not going to go for the big hit. Needs to work on trying to rip the ball out while tackling.

Tough as nails. Played with cast in 2020 with no signs on concern. Clearly does whatever is needed for the team. Not much starting experience but playing time since year 1. Plays with a high motor each play and plays extremely consistently. Leads by example on the field.

Intelligence:

Processes running plays extremely well but will react too quick at times. In pass coverage, does assignment but can be more impactful one he can recognize plays better. Smart player who knows his role every play. Has some versaility but better pass rush skills would be big help to his game.
