Strengths
Being able to play low to the ground with leverage and fire into the designate run lanes to cause a tackle for loss is present. Plays with aggressiveness and straight speed when attacking the ball carrier. Will lay a big hit off but has to be careful with being too explosive. High running motor that shows when moving around the field. When sent on blitzes, he times up his jumps off the snap at a good level to give himself an advantage when breaking through a block. Will shed off blocks with his pure strength and power to complete a play.
Weaknessess
The ability to diagnose what is happening when the play is unfolding is an issue. Will tend to guess wrong or hesitate when firing at a play. Not going to be a huge asset in coverage situations, especially in man-to-man situations. More development with fluidity in his hips has to improve when dropping into coverage. In drop backs, keeping his eyes leveled at the QB has to happen more as well. There was too much of having his back to the QB and his eyes not reading the complete route. There is not a whole lot of passes rushing tools in his play. Will be limited when rushing the passer and will have to win with his pure power.
Big Picture
Ellis Brooks is a fast running LB out of Penn State that will put his nose into any ball carrier. The ability to bend and win with leverage when block shedding is present. Brooks has good closing quickness that shows when firing into running lanes. Being able to control his speed will pay huge dividends when pursuing a ball carrier. More usage of his hands will grant him more opportunities against the run and when rushing the passer. When rushing the passer, Brooks is limited in his pass rush moves. This is a ILB that will need to develop a better ability of recognizing plays as well. There was too many times where he was fooled or guessed wrong when a play was unfolding. Diagnosing between run and pass plays has to improve at the next level. Not a huge coverage LB and will have to improve his skills when dropping into coverage. Overall, this is a talented LB that has a lot of talented traits but improving his ability of reading plays will need to improve to translate well into the NFL.

Athleticism:
6
7.25
Speed and good closing quickness that will pop off film. Has the explosiveness to beat offensive linemen with not only his athleticism but his power as well. Does not have a huge amount of pure play strength but enough to produce effective block sheds. Will move around the field at an effective rate. Not a total liability in defending in all areas of the field. Lateral agility needs more improvement, especially in his drop backs in coverage.

Coverage:

More fluidity in his drop backs will only improve his quickness in his drops. Was too tight in his hips when moving in a certain direction. Is not the ideal LB that you want to have in man coverage. Tends to drop his eyes and struggles with TEs that can run effective double moves. Did make some knock downs in the red zone and is better at reading routes when the field shrinks.

Against The Run:
7.7

Does have a solid ability to dip his shoulder and hips which allows himself to break through blocks when firing into the trenches. Good amount of speed in his range to fire to the opposite C and B gaps to complete a tackle. Does hesitant at times which grants running lanes to open up. Taking better angles when attempting a tackle will insure a better wrap up on the ball carrier. Will pursuit at a good level and be around the ball carrier even if he did not make the tackle.

Competitiveness:
7.58
Tough ILB that will throw his body when making tackles. Is not afraid to put his nose into the middle of a scrum. Shows leadership with his pre-snap communication. His motor is at a good level, which shows when moving/defending around the field.

Being able to recognize between the run and pass has to improve. Processing skills lacked a lot, and it would then allow big plays to happen though the middle of the field. Not going to be a LB that will be moved all around in certain coverage situations.
