Strengths

The biggest strengths for Terrel Bernard are his speed and motor. These two things alone are what allowed him to play at an elite level at a Power 5 school, despite being undersized. His sideline to sideline mobility is as good as anyone coming out and when he gets to the ball, you know he'll make the tackle. He has plenty of experience and has played through adversity, something that he always appealing to NFL teams. His intangles and athletic ability alone make him an intriguing prospect for NFL teams.

Weaknessess

Unfortunately in the NFL, any linebacker who is as fast as Bernard is likely bigger and stronger. His lack of size causes him to get blocked easily and engulfed in the chaos on runs between the tackle. While Bernard's speed allows him to be adequate in pass coverage, he still struggles with route recongition at times.

Big Picture

Terrel Bernard is going to get drafted in Day 3 and he's going to be a productive NFL player, but not as a three down linebacker. Because of his athleticism and tackling ability, he'd be a perfect special teams player. He may also eventually see some time as a linebacker in nickel packages. He does have the tools to potentially be moved to safety, although that would definitely require some work on his pass coverage. However, his size, speed, and tackling ability would make him an ideal candidate to make the switch. I'm not sure that there's a specific team or type of team that would be looking for him, as he's useful as a special teamer to all 32 teams.

Athleticism:

7.25

Athleticism is the name of the game for Terrel Bernard. Due to his lack of size, Bernard must rely on athleticism to be successful and he has it in spades. Bernard has great sideline to sideline speed, allowing him to chase down guys who think they have the corner on him. His great closing speed makes up for the fact that he doesn't always take the best angles. The only part of his athleticism that suffers is his strength. As a smaller guy, he can sometimes get caught up in the mess in the middle, and doesn't have the strength to elude or escape that mess.

Bernard isn't a bad pass rusher, but he relies almost solely on speed and timing to get to the QB. He's not going to shed blockers, but he will run around them and has the speed and bendability to do so.

Coverage:

Bernard's value at the next level, if he's going to play linebacker, is in coverage. Because of his athleticism, he's able to run with any tight end or running back he might come up against. He does a fine job in both man and zone coverage, although at times, he can look lost when he guy he is covering runs a good route.

Against The Run:

Bernard is a great tackler who has a good ability to find the runner, get downhill, and make the tackle. And while he'll almost always make the tackle when he gets to the ball, the getting there part is the issue. Because of his smaller size, he can be a liability on inside runs. He's easily knocked off his spot by blockers, he struggles to maintain his gap, he gets easily lost in the mess, and can just seemed overwhlemed by the bigger players who are trying to block him at the second level. His pursuit angles aren't always great, which he usually makes up for with speed. Unfortunately, that may not work at the NFL level, where everyone is faster.

Competitiveness:

Bernard's competitiveness is unquestioned. He's shown exceptional leadership abilities and despite many injuries, played through the pain and missed less games than expected. His high motor on each and every play is a must in order to make up for his lack of size.

Play recognition for Bernard could use some work, especially in the passing game. In the run game, he has basically no margin for error, as he doesn't have the size to make up for misdiagnosing a play. Because of his size, his position versatility is limited.
