DET

Handling powerful bull rushes with his natural size in both the ground and passing game gives him an advantage at the POA. Is able to get out of his stance in the ground game and make a physical block on a defender in front of him. Can move edge rushers out of the way in outside zone runs and when making reach blocks. Will play with good balance and lateral agility in pass pro when he gets off the LOS quickly.

Weaknessess

The ability to adjust from power to speed is an eye of concern. Not having that consistent drop back in pass pro did allow edge defenders to beat him. Handling defenders that can rush the passer with a lot of speed and flexibility is a major concern. Being able to protect that corner at a high level was not always present. Delivering that strong punch in pass pro was very non-existent at times as well.

Big Picture

This is a big OT out of SMU that has a lot of development to do if he is going to be a starting LT in the league. Jaylon Thomas has a good size that’s gives him a major advantage at the POA when going against smaller defenders. However, there were a lot of issues when it came to handling dominate edge rushers that could go from power to speed in a flash. At times, he was able to have a good get off in pass pro. When that quick get off was not there, he would easily get beat around the corner. Was able to combat inside moves well but the rushers that could bend the corner at a good rate were very effective on this OT. Would use his hands in the run game when attacking a defender but in pass protection, his hands would not be up and shooting at the defender. Not delivering that strong punch to keep the edge rusher off-balance needs to be incorporated more in his game. In the run game, he was able to flash and make good reach and outside blocks to give the back a hole to run through. Pulling does need more improvement if he wants to take that next step. Did show positives in his lateral movement, balance, and mirroring ability but more improvement in his game has to happen to take that next step in the NFL.

Does have a good ability to get out into his pass pro stance with quickness and speed. Not the most flexible OT and will struggle with edge defenders that can bend at a high level. Plays with good balance when handling power rushers and at times can guide/mirror defenders because of good lateral agility. Is not always explosive when delivering his punch to a defender and lets them come to him. Play strength is more power based, leans on his size and natural strength.

Big Play Ability

Movement off the LOS is at a good level in the run game but needs more development. Will make good reach and in-line blocks on defenders that are in front of him because he uses his natural size to his advantage. The ability to make pull blocks is very nonexistent because he is not very agile. Much better at making outside zone blocks then making pull blocks. Adjusting to quicker defenders in space is an issue and needs to improve. Hand usage in the run game is much better than in the pass because he knows he has to attack and go after the defenders. Will use more of his body to try to pancake the defender in front of him.

Pass Blocking:

6.75

When kicking back into pass pro, he is inconsistent in his quickness off the LOS. Sometimes he will have a quick get off and other times it will be much slower. When he does not have that quick get off, he easily losses around the bend and has a hard time recovering. Will mirror defenders but confidently protecting the corner was an issue and edge defenders were able to gain a lot of pressure when rushing against him. Getting his hands up and delivering a strong punch to an edge rusher off the LOS needs to happen more often. When in space with a defender, he can handle those bull rushes and power moves to the inside at a good level. Being that anchor when a pass rusher in trying to bull rush is in his play but resetting when that rusher when he goes to his second move is where more development needs to be made. The ability to adjust from power to speed moves do need more development.

Handling power moves and bull rushes does show that he is a tough lineman. There is an issue with being consistent in his drop backs in pass pro and having that clean jump off. Will be a mauler in the run game but developing that physicality in his pass pro needs to be more evident.

Very little communication at the line. Handles stunts at a good rate but some were able to get by him. Is an offensive tackle because of the lack of pulling ability but playing RT at the next level would not be a horrible experiment.
