Team Fit

Strengths

Extremely productive QB at SE Louisiana. The game looks natural and easy to him. Confident mountain of a QB with effortless arm motion and good feet. Quick release and has the ability to deliver the full route tree. Confident and poised in the pocket. Extends plays by stepping up into the pocket or scrambling until his receivers uncover. Athletic enough that you must account for his legs to pick up chunk yards. Measurables and stats pop as a high upside prospect.

Weaknessess

24 year old Sr. that is already behind the 8-ball in terms of his development timeline. Produced big time numbers against marginal competition at SE Louisiana. Started his career at Arkansas but struggeled; ultimately decided play a level down. Deep ball doesn't look as effortless as it should with his arm strength; wind up doesn't look pretty and accuracy falls off the further he throws downfield.

Big Picture

Cole Kelley is a QB to keep an eye on. His measurables and college production alone will keep him on a majority of draft boards. The towering QB pops on film with impressive mobility, poise, and short-intermediate accuracy. There are some pronounced holes in his game, but as a depth player with upside, there are things to get excited about. 6'7 QBs that can move a bit come around only every few years. Kelley should hear his name called on Day 3 of the Draft as a Depth QB/Project for a team that can afford to nurture him in a #3 role for at least his first year.

Player Comp

Athleticism:

6.95

Towering QB with solid build. Physically strong, can run to run through clutter and bursh off loose limbs. Calm feet in the pocket; agile and nifty enough to step up into the pocket and pick up what is infront of him. Not the true duel-threat that his college rushing stats would indicate, but a mobile QB and well coordinated athlete. No wasted movement which compensates for lack of true speed and explosion.

Quick release, snaps the ball off with good velocity. Accurate short to mid-range. Throws with touch and good pace, but doesn't carry a laser. Winds up to throw the deep ball and velocity wanes the further he throws down field. Can throw the full route tree without issue. Ball placement is inconstent; majority of balls are right in the strike zone, but occasional mental lapse throwing to the wrong shoulder and allowing the defender to make a play. Has a tendency to throw his receiver into contact at least a few times per game. Adjusts his arm slot when necessary to deliver a more catchable ball. Calm feet in the pocket.

Maintains composure in the pocket and shows poise under duress. Plays with confidence. Keeps his eyes downfield on the move and shows improvisational ability when things break down; flipping balls to his outlet or extending plays with his legs. Extremely productive at SE Louisiana, 5,124 Yds and 44 TDS in '21. Completion % jumped from Mid-50's at Arkansas his first two years to Low-70s at SE Louisiana; numbers were correlated at least somewhat with competition.

Admirable toughness, but needs to learn how to slide and avoid contact. Took way too much direct contact last season and doesn't show great vision when running downfield. Doesn't consistently pick up pressure and very late to react. Has some gunslinger to him and forces the ball into tough spots. Unfazed by double coverage and tight windows. Moves safeties with his eyes and can bait DB's throughout his progression.Turnovers were an issue in '21 (10 INTs).
