Strengths

Big, physical back that runs with purpose. Patient runner with good vision to see holes develop and follow blocks or finds cutback lanes. Gets north and south quickly. Elusive in tight spaces. Excellent footwork and change of direction. Always finishes runs and falls forward. Sneaky good weapon in the pass game. Uses quick feet and cutting ability to run sharp routes. Sure-handed and regularly made difficult or contested catches. Willing blocker. Understands defenses and identifies where blitzers would be coming from. Blocks with attitude. Tough and durable, never missing a game in college.

Weaknessess

"Lacks elite top end speed. Not an any time home run threat. Runs a little tall and could lower pad level. Though quick in the box, doesn't make many miss in the open field. Occasional overcommit on blocking attempts puts him in poor position to hold up as well.

Big Picture

In the three years that Spiller played at Texas A&M, he led the team in rushing all three seasons while never missing a game. He improved his yards per carry each season while maintaining a similar workload throughout his career. He was not overworked in the Aggie offense though having only tallied 615 total touches over the three years. Spiller projects as a full time three down featured back who would best fit in a zone scheme where he can pick through the defense then plant and go upfield. This would best utilize his patient running style and excellent vision and instincts. A high effort, high motor player, he rarely takes a negative play and uses great contact balance and quickness to turn a sure loss into no gain or even a short gain. A sneaky good receiving back, his role in the passing game has room to grow if given an expanded route tree and he fine tunes his pass pro techniques. I believe Spiller is the most well rounded back in the class and should be considered the first running back to come off the board.

Displays great footwork making him elusive in tight spaces. Good burst out of cuts and when he plants to get upfield. Between his short area quickness, physical style, and balance, he is tough to bring down with one defender. Runs through arm tackles and always falls forward. Lacks elite top end but has adequate speed.

Big Play Ability

Excellent vision both from the backfield and running in open field. Patient runner who reads and anticipates the hole then plants and gets north/south quickly. Follows blocks well and understands angles of defenders. Runs with a bit high pad level but drives forward with good physicality. Can stick his foot in the ground and change direction at any time. Effective jump cuts in the hole allows him break free. Strong with the ball, high and close to body.

Receiving:

7.25

Surprising ability out of the backfield. Displayed strong hands and control on some difficult catches. Excelled in the routes he was asked to run most notably the Texas/Angle route and wheel route, suggest his route tree could be expanded further. Uses quickness and cuts to create separation but can also make the contested catch.

Very durable back, never missing a game in college. Led team in rushing all three years as a starter. Plays through the end of the whistle whether he is featured in the play or not.

Intelligence:

7.42

Extremely patient back who allows the play to develop and then hits the hole with urgency. Great feel for cutback lane openings. Shows good balance between being patient and just taking what is given, not dancing around too much. Can be used on all three downs whether early down work, pass pro, or as a receiver.
