Final Grade

Has blazing quick speed that flashes all over the field and allows him to make impact plays. Grant can play in the box and make good tackles on ball carriers. He can also blitz with good speed and create consistent pressure on the QB. There is explosiveness behind his hits which can produce results in fumbles. There are good coverage skills in his game in both man and zone type plays. The ability to take RBs or TEs down the field in tight M/M coverage is present. In zone, he can sit back and react because of his fluid hips that allow him to change directions quickly. He has a high motor which is evident in film because he is always flying around the field. Grant has the ability to jump routes to make diving swats or INTs.

Weaknessess

Being too aggressive has backfired on him and has allowed big plays to happen. When some plays were unfolding, he was too aggressive in his pursuit. This was evident in read option or PA plays. Grant is a safety that can cover well but bigger receivers that can climb the latter at a good level were able to beat him. Overcommitting to a angle when attacking a ball carrier has also resulted in him getting beaten in space.

Big Picture

Richie Grant is a safety from UCF that plays with explosive speed and quickness. His play speed is evident when he flies all around the field to make plays. This is a safety that can bring fast blitzes off the edge. His blitzes created a lot of pressure on QBs which resulted in positive plays for the defense. In coverage, Grant is a player that excels in both zone and man type coverages. Grant can cover TEs and RBs in M/M coverage at a good level. When Grant sits back in zone, he is able to recognize pass plays and jump routes at a high level. Grant also has fluid hips that allows him to change directions quickly when reading thrown balls. In run support, he does make a huge impact because he is a committed tackler. Grant takes good angles on ball carriers but at times will overcommit to an angle which results in him getting beat in space. Grant does however have the ability to attack the football to create turnovers for his team. This is a safety that can deliver a powerful punch and has the range to catch up to ball carriers from behind. When a play is developing, he can get caught in overcommitting to a certain player which leads to big plays happening down the field or in the opposite direction. Overall, this is a safety with rangy speed and the ability to jump routes in coverage at a high level.
