The defense will be at a premium in this match-up which has two of the highest-scoring offenses in the country. While SMU has done great at scoring, they have done a terrible job of preventing scores as they have allowed 32 points a game this season. However, terrible one might think this defense is, the Mustangs only two losses this year were against ranked Memphis and Navy away from home. While the numbers say that FAU’s defense is decidedly tougher (22.3 PPG given up), their competition has been weaker in Conference USA.
The Degenerate Menace Says: Which SMU will show up in this game? The one that beat TCU away from home and thrashed Temple by 24 or the one that held off Tulsa in overtime and gave up 51 to East Carolina. Regardless, there will be a lot of points on the board due to the prolific offenses. The computer is leaning toward SMU because they do have a tougher schedule and the loss of Lane Kiffin to Ole Miss will probably have an adverse effect on the Owls in the Bowl.
