Strengths

Scott is one tank of an interior defender. Very good anchor in the gun, eating blocks, and rarely getting thrown off his base. Quick out of his stance, for his size, and has good pad level to go with it. Heavy and strong hands. Typically gets good placement with pop. Stacks blocks well and puts himself in position to disengage and make plays on the ball carrier. Has success breaking through blocks and divert the play in the backfield, won't split too much but can take advantage of lineman who can't match his strength pound for pound. Does exactly what he is asked to do in the middle of the defense and is easily stronger than almost everyone he faces, fits the mold of a NT and a 2-gap defender.

Weaknessess

Scott doesn't provide much in terms of pass rush. He doesn't utilize many moves other than his bull rush and isn't quick, so he's rarely able to make an impact on the pocket in a timely manner. Lacks lateral quickness and has issues changing directions. Has a small tackle radius with issues disengaging to the wrong side of blocks. Doesn't possess the quickness to help stretch plays laterally. Has concerns with hip stability as he doesn't maintain anchor when taking on late double team blocks. Can't disengage from blocks when he gives up his chest to lineman with quicker/stronger hands.

Big Picture

As one of the better run defenders in college football, Scott does exactly what you'd like out of a NT in a 3-4 defense, eating blocks to clear the way for everyone else. He doesn't carry what's needed to be a 3 down defender due to the lack of pass rush help, but he will provide adequate help stopping the run. After losing 10 lbs over the previous year, it appears Scott is trying to slim down and it shows as he seemed more agile in 2020. But still, the NFL is desiring more athletic defenders to combat the evolving offenses, which is disadvantageous for Scott who carries much of the old school style of play. Due to a low ceiling with play time and impact, Scott will likely hear his name be called some time day 3 but will provide much needed depth to a team needing help vs the run.

Athleticism:

When getting off the ball, Scott can catch interior lineman off guard and get to their chest quickly due to his compact stance and get off. He is on the shorter side so he has some level of leverage but he doesn't show enough flexibility to utilize his smaller frame and low center of mass. He shows good explosiveness at times but needs to be more consistent when translating and converting lower body power into his hands with punches. Scott did show improvement in play speed from 2019 to 2020 but still has issues being disruptive because of a lack of sudden quickness and change of direction. Has a solid base but shows some concerns when sitting in his stance when fighting double team blocks, could point to issues with hip flexion and stability.

Scott doesn't provide much help in pass rushing situations outside of an occasional bull rush and pirate stunt. He gets out of his stance well and showed a vast improvement with bringing his hands with his 2020 film. But shows issues with his punches not providing enough power. When interior lineman get their hands inside his numbers, he can't create any separation and doesn't have the adequate moves to counter and make an impact. Pad level can ride a little high when pass rushing and that doesn't help his already stated issues with change of direction. Has a smaller tackle radius as he doesn't provide much help when outside of his base, but can close quicker on the QB and his bull rush w/ hand usage can collapse the pocket quickly.

Against The Run:

Scott provides a much needed anchor in the middle of a defense against the run as a traditional NT. He maintains a natural lower center of mass which helps with leverage in the run game. He stacks and sheds very well, which shows how quick and sudden his hands are. He generally has a good gap integrity but there's a concern that he disengages to the wrong side of blocks while evacuating his general double A-gap responsibility. Initially, Scott can shoot gaps well with his get-off but he fails to shrink his pads and get between blockers on a consistent basis. As a tackler, he does a good job when players land in his lap but anything outside his frame is rarely a sure tackle for him, showing his small tackle radius.

To play on the interior, you need to have a tough streak in your play and Scott is no exception. He often takes on double teams and will fight throughout the play. He maintains a high enough motor to pursue backs down the field and works towards the carrier. Doesn't always produce (depending on the play type) but he will usually bring it. Not seen as much of a disruptor due to his lack of speed but he can divert attention away from the players around him and free up space for his LBs to work fast and flow down hill.

Intelligence:

He shows some spacial awareness at times but also has a tendency to lose track of the ball carrier and misread cuts when disengaging to the wrong side of blocks. That goes hand in hand with his play recognition. At the next level, he will see most of his action at the nose but saw action with play-side shading as a 1-tech and as a big end in 3-tech.
