Strengths
Jones has a wide and stout frame. He has excellent play strength. He gobbles up double teams. He possess a lot of power and finesse. He has an excellent swim move for his size. He does a good job of getting hands on and shedding defenders to get to the ball carrier without giving up pad level or leverage.
Weaknessess
Jones lacks the explosive get off that teams look for in an interior defensive lineman. He has a tendency to stand up and look for the ball carrier. He needs to work on his play recognition to be more effective during screen and run plays. He does not possess the athleticism or footwork to be an effective pass rusher off the edge. He struggles with his placement at times, which causes him to lose leverage early in the play. He is not an every down defensive lineman. Looked gassed late in drives at UConn.
Big Picture
Jones is a wide framed monster of a man. He is the definition of a true nose tackle that requires a double team to block him. However, he lacks the explosiveness and quickness to be an every down threat. Jones will need to work on his footwork and hand fighting to be more effective as run stuffer. He is not overly versatile due to his inefficiencies as a an edge player, but if he can clean up his fundamentals and play recognition mishaps...he could be a solid player for a team looking to play plug up the middle of their defense. Look for a team to take him day 2 or early day 3.
