Strengths

Baron has great athleticism combined with his size to make him look the part of an NFL linebacker. He has plus speed and lateral agility to move sideline to sideline well. This shows up also in his pass coverage as he can quickly get to his zone and keep his feet active. When rushing the QB, he has a great burst at the snap that, more often than not, givess the tackles fits. He is a technically sound tackler who lowers his body, wraps the ball carrier and drives with his legs. He also shows strong hands when tackling for the few that almost break a tackle. He has positional versatility as well playing the WILL, SAM and Mike positions during his career as well.

Weaknessess

Browning struggles with anticipating plays before the snap and can get sucked into play action plays. When rushing the QB, he relies strictly on speed and needs to involve more moves to be a more consistent threat. If he gets latched onto by a lineman, he really struggles to shed the block as well. At times, he will jump to the wrong hole or try to plug a hole leaving his spot to contain the runner allowing them to jump outside. When a runner gets outside, he still needs to work on his attack angles.

Big Picture

Baron Browning from a physical and athletic standpoint is a great NFL prospect. He plays physical and moves sideline to sideline extremely well. His speed and athleticism allow him to cover RBs and TEs pretty well and even lined up in the slot at times. Against more dynamic receivers I wouldn't trust this move. In pass coverage, he sees RBs getting to the flat and quickly closes ground on them. Whe in zone coverage, he does a great job of getting to his position and keeps his feet active. He also flashes great zone awareness as well. When rushing the passer, he relies on speed. More often than not, he has a great first step and quickly can get around the tackle putting quick pressure on the QB. He does not have any variety of pass rush moves though and if the tackle is able to keep up, he is a non-factor in the play. He is versatile enough to have experience at 3 linebacker spots. He is best suited for a read and react position though and he does tend to struggle with anticipating plays. He does tend to get caught up in play action plays and will sometmes ditch his spot to try and plug a hole allowing the ball carrier to bounce outside for a big gain. He struggles to shed blockers but typically does a good job of keeping them off of him so he can break away. His plus athleticism and position versatility make him a great day 2 target. He still has things to improve on but has the mold of a good, long-term starter in the long run.

Athleticism:

7.9

7.25

His natural athleticism is easily visible, particularly in pass coverage. He moves around the field with ease, gets up to speed quickly and has good explosiveness. He has good speed for the LB spot and also good strength to be a strong tackler yet also take on OL when rushing. He does not have elite quickness and closing speed, but absolutely enough to get the job done more often than not.

He has great quickness off the snap and immediately puts the tackle in a tough spot. He stays low and can bend the edge fairly well while maintaining balance and leverage. He also posses converts speed to power very well and can shed the block with ease. Unfortunately, that is about the extend of his rush moves. Primarily playing as a coverage LB, he doesn't rush much and especially not while lining up on the LOS. He has shown he has the ability, just not asked to do it too often while on the line.

Coverage:

Moves extremely well and simply looks comfortable doing so. He knows where he needs to be and gets there quickly without getting flat footed. He shows really good zone awareness and is also pretty good in man converage as well. Often tasked with covering backs and TEs going into the flat which he picks up quickly. He has occasionally covered a deep third as well, while he doesn't have elite speed but with support nearby can be used in many capacities in coverage.

Against The Run:

Being a little shorter, he has natural leverage which he maintains. He can find his way under pads and drive his legs. This leverage allows him to quickly shed blocks fairly easily. He shows good range on the field but will not always be able to chase down the ball. He often takes good angles but occasionally falls into chase mode. He is a sound tackler and while he does provide some thump in his hits, he often wraps and makes sure the play officially ends. He does have the power to knock the ball loose as well and will quickly get after it if he does.

Competitiveness:

High motor player who loves making plays when he can, whether it is in coverage or attacking the backfield. He is clearly a leader on the team in how he plays and is extremely consistent in how he plays. He does whatever is asked of him on the field and simply wants to make an impact. True team player.

Easily one of the smarter players on the field. Shows great focus on his role of each play, whether it be getting to a zone, spying on a RB to make sure they don't go to the flat or trying to get a sack. He knows his role and seems to understand where his support should be coming from. He seems to process plays at a high level but, typically, won't react too quickly setting his team up for a bad play. He has good size and speed and seems to he can play both at the LOS and also off the ball in coverage immediately at the next level.
