Team Fit

DAL

He has the ideal size combined with plus athleticism and speed to hanlde the majority of pass rushers he will face. He anchors fairly well and can turally bend at the knee. He has good quickness and foot movement to not only get off the ball quickly, but pull outside and be an effective blocker in space. He communicates well and typically handles most stunts well and shows the ability to recover in most situations.

Weaknessess

He sometimes will get too forward with his weight leaving him open for an easy rip by the defender. He struggles against elite speed rushers who are getting vertical and can also struggle against quick and strong inside moves. He often does get pushed back initially on bull rush moves as well. He sometimes shows some mental lapses in his game and his focus drops, whether it be getting a pelty or not seeing a stunt happen right in front of him. He is also not the mauler you would expect for a man his size.

Big Picture

Jalen looks to be a good starting tackle early in his career. He has enough size, speed and strength to immediately contribute. He doesn't quite have the athleticism to handle LT but could probably fill in well enough in a pinch. He has plus athleticism and pulls extremely well. He is not the mauler you would expect though and sometimes seems like he struggles more against LB than he does a lineman. He doesn't create tons of movement off the line but usually enough to create the necessary gap. He recovers well and communicates well in handling stunts. He shows active and combative hands. He struggles against pure speed at times and can lunge for these kinds of rushers. While he often gets pushed back itially on bull rushes, he does typically recover and anchor well. He moves extremely well in space and, while sometimes will over pursuit past a block, he can get to the second level with ease. I think he can also be successful if kicked inside to guard giving him some more flexibility in his positiol placement. He will need some more refinement at the next level and needs to make sure he is always foucsed but taking him on day 2 to come in immediately and compete for a starting role is what I expect from him.

Athleticism:

7.25

Jalen moves very well for a guy his size. He has fairly quick feet to get off the LOS quickly but cannot completely cut off pure speed rushers more often than not. While he seems to have good flexibiilty and a tural knee bender, he can get too upright and get out of his stance too quickly. He moves side to side extremely well and, as long as his feet aren't stuck in the mud, he does pretty good mirror ability against most rushers. He can explode off the ball but does and quickly get into a defender or even the second level while keeping great balance. He does not have the quickness to constantly get blocks at the second level as quicker defenders can easiliy avoid him before he can latch onto them. He shows great play strength through and rarely gets pushed all the way back into the QB.

Big Play Ability

Mayfield is a pretty sturdy wall in the run blocking game. While he does not create as much movement as you'd like, he can hold blocks extremely well. He has the quickness to get in place for a reach block and seal off a lane for the ball carrier. He has good athleticism and speed allowing him to pull outside with ease, although he can struggle at times latching onto blocks at the next level. He does not have the quickness to adjust to quicker defenders, allowing them to stay free of his blocking attempts. He does show good hand usage but they can sometimes get too low giving up some of his play strength. He has good leg drive but is not as much of a mauler as you might anticipate.

Pass Blocking:

8.33

Jalen covers the corner fairly well. His two biggest weakesses are spin moves and pure speed rushers. If he is slow off the sp, the defender has a real shot at bending the corner. Typically, he has just enough speed to keep the rusher at bay and push him off his track. He mirrors really well and does a good job keeping his feet active. He shows a strong ability to anchor and reset when being pushed back. He can struggle against inside moves and especially spin moves. Usually, he has a good punch but sometimes lets defenders get too close to him before activating his hands. He can also get too far forward in his stance leaving him open to an easy rip moves at times.

He has the motor and mentality you want in a lineman. While he is not getting tons of pancakes, he is an aggressive blocker who is always looking for a block at all levels of the field. He has good technique, in general, allowing him to be a reliable, consistent blocker.

Jalen is an experienced player in multiple spots on the OL with starts at both RT and LT. He has handled many stunts and typically does so with ease. He communicates well and does not get easily flustered during a play. He just needs to keep his focus that can sometimes lapse for a play or two at a time.
