IND

Strong and powerful OT that wants to drive his opponents into the turf. Uses his size and power to his advantage when producing constructive blocks. Can use his hands to his advantage as well to keep rushers close to him when they try to block shed off. When in-line blocking, he can move defenders to the side and open up a running lane for the ball carrier. Excels at handling power rushers that try to go through the OT. Can use his pure strength to hold up and not provide a whole lot of push back into the QB.

Weaknessess

Not an agile OT that is able to get on the move and adjust to defenders in space. The lack of speed, agility, and quickness clearly shows on film. Has a difficult time creating/producing blocks on defenders that have powerful and explosive speed. Rushers that could get around that outside shoulder would get a very good pass rush off of him. Having that total balance when blocking was not consistently present because of the lack of footwork.

Big Picture

Uses that size and strength to his advantage when going against defenders. He will try to run them into the turf, or he can completely move them out of the way in the run game. Since Penning has so much size and power, it really effects his ability to move around the LOS. Penning lacks a lot of agility and quickness. The lack of movement clearly shows when Penning tries to make a block in space or on the move. At times, he would completely miss a defender in space. The inconsistency in his footwork is very clear in pass protection. The poor footwork then translates to the poor balance in his game. Penning can hold up well when handling power rushes, thanks to his strong hands. However, speed rushers that can dip around the outside shoulder at ease give Penning a difficult time. Overall, this is a very raw OT that has a lot of development to accomplish if he is going to be a starter in the NFL. Being able to improve those athletic traits will be critical in his improvement at the next level.

Athleticism:

7.25

This is not an OT that possess super athletic traits and skills that just pop off film. When he moves around the LOS to create blocks, the lack of speed and agility is clearly there. He does not show a lot of flexibility and bend in his knees, which then allows him to block with a completely unbalanced base. There were plenty of incidents of him getting off balance due to poor footwork. Is a relatively strong OT that has to rely on his pure size and power to create productive blocks. Developing more speed, agility, and quickness at the next level is critical for him in becoming a better OT.

Big Play Ability

Movement off the LOS certainly can improve. Tends to have an average jump off the LOS, lacks the quickness that you want to see. More quickness will only give him a better push at the POA. Does have a good ability to produce in-line blocks. He can slide the defender to the side and open up a running lane when creating a block. Does struggle more when having to get on the move on reach and pull blocks. Adjusting to defenders in space is a major issue that must be improved. At times, he would completely miss a defender right in front of him. Was able to use his strong hands to his advantage when blocking a defender. When having a good grasp, defenders had a hard time block shedding off him.

Pass Blocking:

6.96

Does a good job at protecting the corner when going against defenders that have to use power to win. When a pass rusher that has good speed and quickness rushes against him, it is a challenge for him to hold up because of the lack of complete balance at the POA. Not being able to mirror the defender and slide easily at the LOS is clear as well. His footwork has to improve, too many times he would stop moving his feet and was standing straight up. Can hold up well when having to anchor against a straight bull rush. Can combat inside moves better than combatting speed moves to the outside shoulder. Does use his hands to his advantage when a defender is rushing close to him. Being able to fire punches more often should help when going against those speed/finesse rushers.

Is a tough OT that will try and drive defenders into the turf. Does get upset with himself if he misses a block. Mauling ability is clearly there, will try and throw defenders. Motor could run higher when it comes to being consistent on ever play.

Having better and more communication at the LOS before the ball is snapped has to be introduced. Not very versatile, see him at an OT, not enough quickness to develop as an OG. Stunts were able to confuse him at times. Defenders that fire with speed and quickness can get a solid rush off him.
