Strengths

When given time in the pocket, Wilson is able to make incredible throws with good touch and accuracy. He has a fast release and is able to read defenses throughout his progressions. Wilson has good arm talent and upper body mechanics. Wilson has the athletic ability that you want in a starting quarterback. He was able to scramble for many first downs and touchdowns throughout his time at BYU. He can push the ball down the field with power even when he is on the run. He can make big plays by delivering accurate throws down the field without resetting his feet if he has to.

Weaknessess

The footwork in his drop backs need some work. The lack of consistent body control and footwork caused inaccurate throws when stepping up in the pocket. Pressure that gets directly in his face can cause him to bail out of the pocket or make inaccurate throws. At times, throws on the move were not made with outstanding accuracy and did get away.

Big Picture

Zach Wilson is a very talented quarterback out of BYU that relies on making plays with both his feet and arm. Wilson has a good athletic ability that allows him to scramble for extra yards when a play breaks down. He has good poise in the pocket and knows when to move to avoid the defensive rush. The arm talent is a plus for Wilson. He has a quick release and is able to make accurate throws all over the field. He makes all kinds of throws including impressive deep outs and in routing throws. The inability to consistently reset his feet on the move and not having clean footwork in the pocket is a concern that needs some work at the next level. However, Wilson was able to make big throws down the field while off balance that were still accurate. I would like to see him develop more bend in his knees in his drop backs as well. Wilson tends to have a sliding drop back. Much better footwork inside and outside the pocket will improve his overall game. Overall, this is a competitive football player that knows how to read defensive coverages and find his open man when the play breaks down. Wilson knows what it takes to convert on 3rd down, in the red zone, and on mostly ever drive. He sees the field at a good level and makes good decisions to put his team in a winning position.

Athleticism:

7.75

Countless times he was able to keep drives alive by scrambling for the first downs. He has good speed and acceleration to pick up a decent chunk of yards. Wilson is not an explosive runner, but he can be effective on the ground making defenders miss. However, he does not have quickest and most nibble feet in his drop backs. Wilson does have the ability to climb back into the pocket and avoid pressure at a good rate. He can scramble and make throws on the run. Wilson ran lots of RPO and play action plays effectively at BYU.

Wilson has a very quick release with a smooth delivery that allows him to hit his receivers in a flash. He has good arm strength and good upper body mechanics. Wilson is able to push the ball down the field with great touch and accuracy when his feet are set. He can squeeze balls into tight windows and throw receivers open because of his good overall accuracy. When on the move, he can make accurate short and mid throws. However, there were many times where throws got away from him because he was off balance. Developing better lower body mechanics with good balance will help improve the power and accuracy of his throw attempts. More bend in his knees and going through a cleaner two and three step drop back will only help him more at the next level.

The poise in the pocket is at a good level for Wilson. When given space and time, He stands strong in the pocket and has a good sense for pressure. Wilson knows how to move around to evade pressure and make big-time throws. When pressure does get directly in front of him, he can break down and make an inaccurate throw. Wilson does not have the most powerful arm, but he can make deep accurate throws. This is a competitive QB that is always fighting for the first down with either his legs or arm.

The ability to keep drives alive by making good decisions is active in his game. Wilson is smart during in game situations. He knows when he has to use his legs or when he has to use his arm to make a throw for the first. He has good vison and sees the entire field at a level that you want. Wilson does go through his full progression when given time but tends to stare at where he is throwing. There was not as much pre-snap work in his game and will have to develop more moving forward.
