Strengths

Michel runs with great balance and agility. He is a powerful runner with a good blend of quickness and elusiveness. He runs with ideal pad level dropping his shoulder on impact. He has excellent short area and lateral quickness, as he is very slithery when running between the tackles. He has the ability to create space when there isn’t any available. He can run past defenders and doesn’t often get caught from behind. He can avoid defenders in the hole and in the second and third levels. He has excellent vision and instincts. He is a versatile athlete who runs crisp routes in the passing game and displays soft hands. He is very stout in pass protection as well.

Weaknessess

Sony Michel is a great athlete that runs hard on each play. He lacks home-run speed, but has the ability to get to the edge and rarely gets caught from behind. He is less explosive than some of the other backs in this class. He is more elusive and utilizes his short area quickness to get through the hole. Michel has had trouble with ball protection throughout his career. He often carries the ball with one hand and has fumbled 12 times over his 655 career touches. He has the ability and talent to be a featured back at the next level, but he has never been the lead back throughout his career. He has split carries in each of his seasons at Georgia, and did not receive more than 16 carries in any given game this past season. It is concerning weather he can handle a featured back workload.

Big Picture

Michel runs with great agility and balance. He is very quick and can avoid defenders at or beyond the line of scrimmage. He has a great blend of power, agility and elusiveness that allows him to make defenders miss in close quarters. He is very loose and slithery on inside runs, and has enough speed to get to the edge on stretch plays; however, he does not possess home-run speed. He runs with great pad level, and lowers his shoulder on contact. He is a very versatile player. He plays with good vision and can find creases and cut back lanes in order to avoid contact at the second and third levels. He displays soft hands and can run crisp routes in the passing game. Michel is very stout in pass protection. He is very aware and often can sense or find the free rusher and give his quarterback extra time. He has had some issues securing the ball. He runs with the ball in one arm slightly away from his body. He will need to hold onto the ball and secure it with two hands at the next level. He had the ability to be a three down back; however, he has never had the feature role in Georgia’s backfield splitting carries with the likes of Todd Gurley or Nick Chubb. Michel has the ability to lead and NFL backfield, and contribute to the ground and passing games right away.

Big Play Ability

Michel does an excellent job of sniffing out the hole. He is a very patient runner, and can get through it fast. He has great ability to make defenders miss at the line, and he does a great job finding cutback lanes in the second and third levels of the defense. Michel can plan his feet and change directions when he sees a cutback lane. He has quick feet and good balance that help him avoid defenders in the open field. On inside runs, Michel is very slithery and can make multiple defenders miss in the hole. He is a very loose runner and has the ability to make defenders miss. Michel runs with great pad level and drives his legs through contact. He is a strong runner, and he can generate space when none is available. Michel has struggled with ball protection throughout his career. He has limited the amount of fumbles he commits over the past two years; however, it is still concerning. He often carries the ball with one hand and can be found to hold the ball away from his body (similar to Shady Mccoy or Adrian Peterson). He has fumbled a total of 12 times on 655 total touches. If he doesn’t learn to take better care of the ball, it may be an issue at the next level.

Receiving:

7.50

Michel has soft hands and can catches the ball smoothly. He can catch the ball away from his body. Michel is a very fluid route runner. He hasn’t has much opportunity running a receivers route tree, but he is very quick and accurate when running routes out of the backfield. Michel has a nice blend of power, quickness and balance. He can gain separation and is excellent in the open field. He can make defenders miss and gain extra yards from avoiding or lower his shoulder upon contact. He can create separation utilizing his quick feet and agility. His route running also helps in gaining separation.

Michel doesn’t do much lead blocking, but he is strong and physical and has the capability to be an adequate lead blocker. He uses a good base in pass pro and has great awareness. Michel can over extend at times in open space, but he often displays good form. He can chip a defender getting the rusher off his spot or out of rhythm and does an excellent job of disrupting the rush. Michel is very stout in pass protection. He doesn’t an excellent job of identifying the blitz and free rusher. He utilizes a wide base, and can mirror the defender and push him off his spot. He can provide extra time for his quarterback. Michel does a great job of identifying the blitz and often knows which player to pick up during the rush.

Michel is a very tough player. He has played through multiple knee and ankle injuries throughout his career without missing any or significant time. He has never been the featured back in Georgia’s offense, always splitting carries with another back (Todd Gurley, Nick Chubb). He hasn’t had the opportunity to carry the ball over 20 times in a game; however, this can be looked at in two ways: He is a fresh runner with the talent and size to contribute from day one, or he may not be able to carry the load and become a featured back in an NFL offense. I believe it is the former. He has ideal size, power and quickness and has the ability to contribute from day one. he has the talent to be a three down back at the next level. Michel never became a featured back or carried the ball more than 16 times this past season; however, he has been extremely productive with the touches he has received. He had an excellent season, averaging 7.9 yards per carry while scoring 17 total touchdowns against some of the top defenses in the nation. Michel is an extremely consistent player. He was played well in every game this season (excluding the week 10 Auburn matchup). He is an excellent player that gives his all to each play. He has an innate ability to find creases at the line and the talent to avoid defenders or gain yards after contact. Michel was a leader on Georgia’s offense this season. He wants to succeed and win every game. He will do everything asked of him, and wants to play as much as possible.

Intelligence:

8.31

Michel has great instincts. He can find creases in the line, and work through them. He can identify the blitz and the free runner and disrupt their path to the quarterback. Michel is a very smart athlete. He has had to learn multiple offensive schemes at Georgia and tweak his playing style to fit his offensive coordinators needs. He is a very reliable player. Georgia utilizes a shotgun/ pro-style offensive scheme, which will help Michel adjust to an NFL offense early in his career. Michel is a very versatile player. He runs hard with good power and quickness, can find creases in the line and cutback lanes in order to avoid defenders in the second and third levels. He inconsistent in pass protection and has soft hands. He will be a three down back at the next level, and has a chance to be electric in the passing game.
